If the Avro 504 is considered the world's greatest training aircraft, then the de-Havilland Tiger Moth must be a worthy runner-up. A descendant of theD.H.60 Moth, which revolutionized private flying in the 1920s, the Tiger Moth become the RAF's standard initial trainer during World War II.
From 1932 until 1947 it saw service with the RAF, who operated some 4,000 during the war. A further 3,000 examples were built under license in Canada, Australia and New Zealand under the Commonwealth Air Training Scheme.
A fully Aerobatic aircraft, the Tiger Moth was also used for blind flying instruction where the trainee pilot had to sit beneath a hood fitted over the rear cockpit and fly the aircraft solely on instruments. -------Historic Aircraft.
